Student killed in WVU apartment complex shooting; 2 charged
A West Virginia University student was killed in a shooting early Friday morning at a university-run apartment complex near the campus, officials said.
Eric James Smith, a sophomore from Clementon, N.J., was identified as the victim in the shooting, which happened around 4 a.m. at the College Park Apartments. Officials said Smith was a former resident there.
Police went to College Park around 4 a.m. in response to reports of gunshots. Smith was found in a hallway outside one of the apartments, according to the university.
Two suspects were arrested shortly after the shooting at a nearby shopping center. A weapon was found during the arrest. The unidentified suspects were charged and expected to be arraigned Friday afternoon.
University police Chief W.P. Chedester said the motive for the shooting was not known. He called it an isolated incident.
“Multiple agencies responded to support our department at the scene,” Chedester said. “We appreciate their cooperation and assistance as our investigation continues.”
The university is asking anyone with further information to contact police at 304-293-3136.
“It’s always a tragedy when a young person loses his life,” Dean of Students Corey Farris said. “Our hearts go out to his family, those students and others who knew him. Our main priority right now is offering support to our campus community.”
Counselors from the University’s Carruth Center were at the complex to assist residents.
