Amtrak to resume Pittsburgh to Harrisburg and Philadelphia service June 1

Amtrak will resume its service from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia and New York City on June 1, the first time the passenger trains will have run the route since March 18 because of the state’s covid-19 shutdowns.

The twice daily service service on the Pennsylvanian route from Pittsburgh to New York, with stops in Greensburg and Latrobe, will resume with the morning eastbound train and afternoon westbound train, Amtrak said. But, Keystone service connecting Harrisburg with Philadelphia and New York, will run on a modified schedule in response to the demand, Amtrak said. The announcement was made in conjunction with PennDOT, which provides Amtrak with subsidies on both passenger routes.

The modified Keystone train will make nine weekday round-trips and six round-trips on weekends. The Keystone Service, however, will temporarily operate only between Philadelphia and Harrisburg. There will not be any service between New York and Philadelphia.

Amtrak also is restoring Acela service on the Northeast Corridor, from New York City to Philadelphia to Washington, D.C., on a modified schedule beginning June 1. Modified service will include the restoration of three weekday Acela round-trips.

Amtrak continued to run the Capitol Limited — from Chicago to Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C. — as other train service was halted.

Seating on the trains will be filled in a manner to allow for physical distancing. Ticket sales will be limited to 50% capacity on reserved services, so that the Centers for Disease Control social distancing guidelines can be maintained, Amtrak said.

Passengers will be required to wear facial coverings — cloth coverings or masks.

Tickets are for sale and can be found, along with current schedules, on Amtrak.com and through the Amtrak app.

Amtrak said it continues to take extra steps to disinfect stations and trains, spraying a disinfectant focusing on highly touched surfaces. To reduce the possibility of transmitting germs, cash will not be accepted in the stations or trains. Clear protective barriers have been retrofitted at stations where there are no current glass barriers.

Conductors will make announcements when a train reaches a station to minimize crowding at the door.
