Animal Friends’ New Year’s Rescue returned this year after a hiatus in 2020 due to covid-19.

Dogs, cats and rabbits from four partners—the Lawrence County Humane Society, the Humane Society of Greene County, Erie Area Rabbit Society and Animal Charity of Ohio—were brought to Animal Friends on New Year’s Eve as part the large-scale rescue.

In addition, since the beginning of December, about 30 dogs were transferred to the Ohio Township facility from partners Finding Shelter, the Humane Society of Harrison County, South Hills Cooperative Animal Control, Orphans of the Storm and Memphis Animal Services. In total, through the New Year’s Eve Rescue and the other transports, about 50 animals were brought to Animal Friends during the month of December.

The New Year’s Rescue began as a way to offer a second chance at life to animals who were slated for euthanasia at animal control facilities. With overpopulation being less of an issue locally, the new purpose of the event is to transfer in to Animal Friends animals from areas where they haven’t had as much success finding adopters in hopes that they can help find them forever homes.
