Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh is caring for 27 dachshund dogs that were rescued from a North Fayette home Monday.

With help from North Fayette Police Department, Humane Animal Rescue officers executed a search warrant on a North Fayette house Monday. Officers were investigating neighbors’ concerns about unsanitary conditions and animal welfare.

Officers found the conditions inside the home to be “deplorable,” animal rescue said in a news release. There was an “overwhelming odor and layers of feces covering the floor,” according to Humane Animal Rescue.

Officers found 27 dachshunds on the property. The dogs were suffering from malnourishment and dental disease, the nonprofit said. Many had large clumps of matted fur and overgrown nails, which can make it hard for the animals to walk. Some of the dogs also had eye infections.

One dog also was found dead at the property.

The animals were taken to Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh’s East Side domestic shelter, where they were evaluated by medical and animal care teams and given needed care and treatment.

Humane Animal Rescue encouraged people who suspect an animal is in harm to reach out to them at 412-345-7300 or call their local police department.

The nonprofit is accepting donations to help care for the dachshunds and other animals.
