The Armstrong School District on Monday voted 7-2 to furlough seven full-time and two part-time teachers, and a nurse, according to TribLive news partner WTAE.

School Board President Jason Elkin told WTAE that district administration originally recommended 14 positions be cut.

“We were attempting to do what is most fiscally responsible for both the taxpayers and our stakeholders, as well as limiting the impact on the students so that we make sure that we continue to grow our students,” Elkin told WTAE.

Departments impacted by the furloughs include the high school library program, the French language program and some elementary school teachers.

The Armstrong teachers’ union was against the furloughs.

“We are devastated to lose these people — qualified staff, friends and colleagues. Our students deserve better than cuts and furloughs,” AEA President Kevan Landstrom told WTAE.
