Butler County officials announced nonessential county personnel would be temporarily furloughed starting Tuesday.

Director of Human Resources/Chief Clerk Lori Altman said department heads still were evaluating staff Monday and they would have more definitive numbers Tuesday of how many of the county’s estimated 550 employees would be laid off.

Cuts in emergency dispatch, emergency management, prison and custodial staffs are not expected.

Commissioner Leslie Osche said via press release that the moves are out of safety and health concerns while maintaining operations during the coronavirus pandemic.

“The commissioners have made the decision in conjunction with the court and elected officials regarding county operations and staffing,” said Osche. “Our primary concerns are to continue to provide services to county taxpayers as ensured in the Constitution while balancing the safety of our employees… We appreciate the patience and cooperation of our staff and union.”

Commissioner Kim Geyer said the furloughs, which help address concerns among some staff, are part of an unprecedented process.

“We understand those who need to be at home and stay with their families,” Geyer said.

Commissioner Kevin Boozel said the county is trying to anticipate state and federal measures as the situation evolves.

“This is the next step,” Boozel said. “This is a process. We’re committed to the long haul.”

The commissioners also enacted a resolution supporting the state primary election day be postponed from April 28 to June 2.

Commissioners declared a disaster emergency in the county on March 18.
