A Butler man was arrested for suspected drunken driving twice in the same day early this month, and police say he was more intoxicated during the second stop.

State police said they stopped a minivan driven by Jonathan Joseph Dillingham, 26, around 3:30 a.m. June 1 in the 200 block of Broad Street after seeing the vehicle was missing its front bumper, according to a criminal complaint against him.

State police said Dillingham smelled strongly of alcohol, his eyes were glassy and bloodshot and his speech was slurred, and an open, 16-ounce can of beer was behind the driver’s seat. Police said his blood-alcohol content measured at 0.156%, nearly twice the legal limit of 0.08%, according to state police.

Later that day, Butler police received a complaint about someone in a minivan driving erratically, according to a separate criminal complaint against Dillingham. City police said they found the minivan in a Citizens Bank parking lot on North Main Street with Dillingham and a woman inside.

A city officer said he detected a strong odor of alcohol upon contact with Dillingham and he had slurred speech and glassy, bloodshot eyes. The complaint said the officer saw two open cans of beer and a clear plastic bag of marijuana in the center console.

When the officer ordered Dillingham out of the vehicle, he “made an unsolicited statement that he had been drinking all day,” the complaint said.

Police said Dillingham was arrested for DUI after allegedly being unable to complete field sobriety tests, and a search of the vehicle turned up two small crack rocks and a glass crack pipe in the front passenger side door. His blood-alcohol content later measured at 0.249 percent, more than three times the legal limit, according to police.

City and state police filed DUI, drug and traffic offense charges against Dillingham on Monday. He is scheduled for preliminary hearings on July 8 before Judge William T. Fullerton.
