P3R, the self-proclaimed engine behind Pittsburgh’s favorite races and runs will present a running clinic at the Robert Morris University Island Sports Center.

P3R is partnering with UPMC to provide UPMC Sports Medicine Running Clinic: Empowering the Teenage Athlete on July 27 and 28 at the P3R Track and Field Complex at the Robert Morris University Island Sports Center.

For $100 students can learn from the best coaches, sports medicine physicians and sports nutrition and performance experts in the country.

The event lasts from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and participants are promised a free pair of Brooks running shoes as well.

“For cost, it’s a great deal,” said Amy Scheuneman, director of youth programming at P3R.

“It’s important for kids to realize what a healthy lifestyle can do for them,” she said.

When Scheuneman became director of youth programming at P3R a year ago, one of her first initiatives was to reach the teenage age group.

“We want to bridge the gap between Kids of Steel and our adult races,” she said.

Scheuneman hopes to give back to students by training them on proper running technique, the importance of hydration and mental health tips.

“We believe that running benefits all levels regardless of ability,” she said. “There is an opportunity for kids to gain self-confidence, set goals and make friends as well as a stress release component.”

Drew Haberberger is the head boys track and field coach at Mt. Lebanon High School and has worked with P3R in the past.

“They’re always great,” he said.

John Cotton, assistant director of youth programming at P3R, is excited to engage with a wide range of students in the western Pennsylvania region.

“It’s for any middle schoolers and high schoolers who want to learn a little more about running, and there are also aspects for serious runners who want to bring their running to the next level,” he said.
