Most people consider the places where they worship to be a safe refuge from the the outside world.

But the Oct. 27 mass shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh and other high-profile attacks on religious institutions have illustrated the vulnerability congregations can face.

To help communities of faith improve security, a free Active Shooter Preparedness and Response program is being conducted from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. June 27 at the Riverside Community Church located at the Pittsburgh Mills Mall.

The main presenter will be Bob Winters, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Protective Security Advisor for Western Pennsylvania.

The program is aimed at clergy, staff, volunteers and congregants from all denominations.

RSVP is required by sending an email toMichael Spurr at: michael.spurr@alleghenycounty.us.
