A Cranberry Township medic has been charged with using a phone camera to secretly record women using the restroom at his EMS station.

Matthew Thomas Leonard, 37, has been suspended without pay as police investigate.

Police were first called to the Cranberry Township EMS station along Rochester Road on Jan. 24 after a female employee discovered the phone partially concealed behind a trash can with its camera pointed at the toilet, according to a criminal complained filed Tuesday.

Leonard is accused of making recordings of four women and using file-sharing software to upload some of the videos to his laptop. He was charged with two counts of invasion of privacy and one count each of illegal interception of communications and criminal use of a communications facility.

“(Leonard) confirmed ownership of the phone and stated he used it to surreptitiously record a female in the women’s restroom,” police said in the criminal complaint.

Police obtained a warrant Jan. 29 to search Leonard’s phone after he told them that there were videos on the device of other women he secretly recorded.

Investigators discovered videos of three other woman who worked at the EMS station.

The phone also had several clips “clearly showing Leonard in the bathroom, making attempts to conceal the cellular device in various manners,” according to the complaint.

Leonard did not have an attorney listed in court documents.

“We are aware of the situation that occurred, and are fully cooperating with the Cranberry Township Police Department,” Jeff Hodges, president of the medical service, posted on social media. “This is a police matter and all inquiries are being directed to that department.

“The individual in question has been suspended without pay, pending the police investigation. The Cranberry Township EMS is taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety of our employees and community.”

Leonard was arraigned Tuesday before Cranberry District Judge David Kovach and released on his own recognizance. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 22.
