A vehicle crash sent two people to the hospital Thursday afternoon in southern Butler County and shut down a stretch of Route 8 for hours.

The incident happened about 2:20 p.m. on Route 8 at Brownsdale Road near the border of Middlesex and Penn townships, a Butler County 911 dispatcher said.

Two medical helicopters responded to take the injured people to a nearby hospital.

Their condition was not immediately available.

A roughly two-mile stretch of Route 8, from Cruikshank Road in Middlesex north to Dinnerbell Road in Penn Township, closed in both directions while crews worked to clear the wreckage and investigate.

Route 8 had reopened in both directions as of 6 p.m.
