Phil McGraw, best known as “Dr. Phil,” apologized to Slippery Rock University after slighting the university in comments he made about the college admissions scandal.

McGraw said he didn’t know Slippery Rock University existed and thought he was making up the name.

“Please accept my apology for referring to ‘Slippery Rock’ during a recent interview as the antithesis of the kind of school parents caught up in the college admissions scandal would be bragging about their children attending,” McGraw wrote to students, faculty and alumni.

“It was definitely not aimed at the real Slippery Rock University. It was from ignorance, not intention, that I made the comment, as I was unaware of your school and intended to use a fictitious example.

“I have since educated myself about SRU and could not be more impressed with your fine institution.”

Slippery Rock posted McGraw’s apology to its Facebook page.

In an interview Thursday, McGraw said the college admission scandal wasn’t about parents buying an education for their kids but buying the prestige that comes with attending an Ivy or top-tier university.

“I think it’s bragging rights for them, and they don’t want to be the one parent that says, ‘Well, yeah, my kid’s going to, like, Slippery Rock,’ ” McGraw said.

In response to McGraw’s original comment, Slippery Rock University President William Behre cited the school as an affordable option where “students whose parents work to pay their mortgage will find quality institutions that open doors to the American dream.”

He invited McGraw to visit the Butler County school this fall to meet students and alumni.

McGraw called Slippery Rock “the real deal,” ranked 90th by U.S. News and World Report in Regional Universities North; 54th in best value; and 25th in top public schools.

McGraw didn’t say if he’d be taking Behre up on his offer to visit.

“Slippery Rock University certainly deserves no slight from me or anyone else, intended or otherwise,” he said. “I wish SRU nothing but the best.”
