Pennsylvania Turnpike reopens between New Castle and Cranberry exits following crash
A section of the Pennsylvania Turnpike reopened Tuesday afternoon between the New Castle and Cranberry exits after crews repaired a bridge that was struck by a tractor-trailer.
The crash happened shortly before 9 a.m. at milepost 13.3.
Turnpike spokeswoman Renee Vid Colborn said there were no injuries when the rig hit the bridge and caught fire. All eastbound and westbound lanes were closed and detours were in place until about 1:30 p.m.
Colborn said state police told turnpike officials two incidents led to the crash.
She said the first involved an SUV that spun out on the bridge. The second crash was between the tractor-trailer and a commercial concrete truck. Colborn said those two vehicles collided while attempting to avoid the SUV. The tractor-trailer then hit the bridge and caught on fire.
The turnpike reopened after inspectors checked the structure and workers repaired a section of the bridge deck, she said.
