A free distribution of fresh produce is planned Wednesday at Fallingwater in Fayette County.

Open to anyone in need, the giveaway organized by 412 Food Rescue will take place from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the main parking lot of the historical site at 1491 Mill Run Road, off Route 381 south of Mill Run.

Each household will receive a 25-pound box of fresh produce from local donor Paragon, available through the USDA’s Farmers to Families Box Program.

“In Fayette County, about 15% of the overall population is at or below the poverty rate, and we know financial challenges have escalated significantly in this covid-19 crisis,” says 412 Food Rescue Chief Operating Officer David Primm. “In the Laurel Highlands area, the tourism industry supports about 15,000 jobs, but pandemic-related closures, furloughs and travel restrictions have hit industry workers and business owners hard.

“Providing access to fresh food is an important way to support them and other affected members of this community,” Primm says.

“As tourism and local businesses slowly restart, many families throughout our region are still navigating difficult financial times. Fallingwater and the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy are pleased to serve as a distribution site for 412 Food Rescue,” says Fallingwater Director Justin Gunther.

Since March, 412 Food Rescue has distributed more than 12,000 meals to bus stops in the City of Pittsburgh, Sto-Rox School District and McKeesport School District; started a Home Delivery program that has distributed food boxes to more than 1,500 households in Pittsburgh and Beaver County; and launched Community Takeout to financially support restaurants and unemployed service workers while feeding people in need.
