A Fayette County man was struck and killed early Thursday as he was walking home after his car became disabled along Route 51 in Franklin Township, according to state police.

Douglas VanDivner, 23, of Hibbs, died of multiple injuries at Uniontown Hospital after the 5:14 a.m. incident that occurred along the highway about six miles north of Uniontown, state police said.

Troopers said VanDivner and an unidentified passenger were walking home, leaving a 1990 Cadillac DeVille partially in the roadway near the Route 51 intersection with Industrial Park Road.

VanDivner was struck by a 2008 Mercury Mountaineer, driven by Colby Umbel, 23, of West Leisenring, and carried a short distance on the sport utility vehicle prior to striking a guardrail, according to police.

Umbel was treated for minor injuries at the hospital, police said.

Trooper Joshua Wiskeman reported that VanDivner’s car was illegally parked on the highway.

State police are continuing to investigate.
