Winter weather arrived in Southwestern Pennsylvania Sunday night and Monday morning with the first snowfall of the season, but warmer temperatures will return soon, according to the National Weather Service.

The official snowfall total at the NWS station in Moonwas 0.6 inches, according to meteorologist Jason Frazier. Many communities in Allegheny and Westmoreland counties saw a similar amount or less, though officials are still collecting snowfall reports from across the region, Frazier said.

The snowfall was heavier farther north. Evans City in Butler County got about an inch, while parts of Lawrence County got about 3 inches, according to the NWS.

“We just got a little taste of winter here today, and it’s going to be a pretty warm pattern for the foreseeable future,” Frazier said.

Any remaining flurries are expected to taper off Monday, and temperatures will rise throughout the week. Wednesday’s high will be 64, and temperatures could reach the low 70s by the weekend, according to the NWS.

Sunday night’s snowfall was a bit earlier than usual, but far from a record. The earliest recorded accumulation of snow in the Pittsburgh region was on Oct. 18, 1972, when 1.8 inches fell.
