Apple Castle harvests about 10,000 bushels of apples every year.

And many of them go to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.

Steve Johnston, the sixth-generation owner of Apple Castle, joined Brian Gulish on the Food Podcast to discuss his company’s commitment to support Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank’s mission of ending hunger in Southwestern Pennsylvania.

“There’s so much food insecurity in our communities and, as a farm, we have an abundance of produce, mostly apples, and it’s gratifying and good for us to serve others,” Johnston said.

Johnston said the relationship with the food bank began in about 2005.

At nearly 100 apples per bushel, Apple Castle produces about 1 million apples per year. And they donate more than just apples to the food bank.

“We grow lots of peaches, nectarines, plums, peaches, cherries, blueberries, raspberries, sweet corn, and winter squash,” Johnston said.
