Western Pennsylvanians woke to frigid temperatures Friday morning, and could see some snow showers this evening.

In a month that has not risen above freezing since New Year’s Day, the Pittsburgh region saw a new monthly low temperature — 6 degrees — according to the National Weather Service.

Some school districts in the Fayette County area operated on delays because of the cold.

The weather service announced a winter weather advisory for areas including Allegheny, Beaver, Washington and Westmoreland counties — from 7 p.m. Friday to 1 a.m. Sunday.

WTAE meteorologist Ashley Dougherty said in her Friday morning forecast that the high temperature for Friday will be around 25 degrees.

She said light snow showers may start at around 6 p.m. Friday.

“We are going to see a lot of that accumulation overnight,” she said.

Accumulation could be anywhere between 1 to 2 inches of snow, and 3 inches in areas of higher elevation, she said.

“It is cold enough for that snow to accumulate,” she said.

Saturday won’t be “snow-free,” Dougherty said, but most of the snow will happen overnight.

Dougherty predicted scattered flurries Saturday, dry weather Sunday and scattered flurries to return Monday.

“We are going to warm up in the low 30s,” she said. “That’s actually going to make a big difference. We’ve been stuck into the 20s with windchills in the teens, pretty much for the past week.”
