If the last few plants from your summer garden are still hanging on, it’s time to bust out the row covers.
That is literally the first piece of advice — “take steps now to protect tender plants” — in the National Weather Service’s preparedness section, for a frost advisory starting late Friday into Saturday morning.
Sub-freezing temperatures down to 30 degrees — and into the 20s in sheltered valleys — is expected throughout Southwestern Pennsylvania and the northern panhandle of West Virginia, according to the advisory.
Friday’s forecast calls for a high in the low 50s with a 30% chance of rain, before the overnight temperature dips to a projected 31 degrees.
And while frost is expected overnight, the advisory expires at 10 a.m.
Saturday’s forecast is sunny and 57 degrees.
The NWS Pittsburgh station recorded a low of 36 degrees on Oct. 6, but that is the closest to freezing the region has come so far this fall.
