Giant Eagle buys prescription files from another 15 Rite Aid stores, completing buying spree
Giant Eagle has purchased prescription files from another 15 Rite Aid stores as part of a fourth and final wave of transfers from the bankrupt pharmacy chain to the Cranberry-based grocer.
Altogether, Giant Eagle has bought files from 83 Rite Aid stores across Pennsylvania and Ohio since late May.
The move initially was said to include 78 stores, but changes in how Rite Aid bundled files brought that number to 83, according to Giant Eagle spokeswoman Jannah Drexler. That does not mean the supermarket chain acquired more files than first intended, she added. Prescription files include information about the drugs, prescribing doctors, dosage and more.
The files will be automatically transferred to the nearest Giant Eagle Pharmacy, except from two locations that will become Giant Eagle drugstores after Rite Aid moves out.
Giant Eagle has not identified the standalone locations.
Monday’s announcement included a dozen stores in the Pittsburgh area:
• 503 Clifton Road, Bethel Park
• 2655 E. Carson St., South Side
• 1222 Brownsville Road, Carrick
• 2150 Brownsville Road, Carrick
• 6375 Library Road, South Park
• 3210 Banksville Road, Banksville
• 517 Beaver St., Sewickley
• 600 William Marks Drive, Munhall
• 1700 Murray Ave., Squirrel Hill
• 2302 Sheffield Road, Aliquippa
• 109 Allegheny River Blvd., Oakmont
• 1200 Pittsburgh St., Cheswick
Giant Eagle also picked up a store in the Johnstown, Mercer and New Wilmington areas.
The company previously said it is reaching out to affected Rite Aid customers to provide “clear, timely information and help ensure uninterrupted access to pharmacy products and services.” It also is hiring additional pharmacists to serve its growing patient base.
Rite Aid filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May and is in the process of selling its assets, including the roughly 1,200 stores it had at the time.
Besides Giant Eagle, Rite Aid has sold files to CVS, Walgreens, Albertsons and Kroger.
