Appointments for children ages 5 to 11 to get covid-19 vaccinations could be available as early as this weekend at Giant Eagle pharmacies in the area, according to an announcement.
Anyone who wants to schedule an appointment for a child in that age range can visit the grocery store chain’s website at gianteagle.com/covid and search for time slots. Locations were receiving shipments of Pfizer vaccine doses Friday, and appointments should be available in the coming days, according to a spokesman.
Pharmacies and health care providers in the region are gearing up for a new wave of immunizations as children across the country this week were cleared to begin getting smaller doses of the Pfizer vaccine after approval from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Shipments of the vaccine started hitting the Pittsburgh area Thursday.
The federal government has promised enough doses for the nation’s 28 million children in the age range. That dose is one-third the amount given to older children and adults. The two shots will be given three weeks apart. Officials with retail drug stores and pharmacies such as Walgreens, CVS and Rite Aid have said appointments for children ages 5 to 11 will begin this weekend.
