Giant Eagle to stop doubling coupons
Giant Eagle will no longer double manufacturer coupons beginning Sunday.
With so many e-coupons and digital choices, the store is changing to accommodate technology. The O’Hara-based retailer will continue to redeem the coupons for face value.
“As customer usage of manufacturer coupons continues to decrease both in our stores and across the grocery industry, Giant Eagle has decided to discontinue the doubling of manufacturer coupons across our markets,” company spokesman Dan Donovan said in a statement.
According to grocery-coupons-guid.com, stores often double coupons as an incentive to drive traffic. The manufacturer will reimburse the grocery store for the face value of the coupon, but the store ends up having to pay for the amount they’ve doubled. Some stores may limit the face value they will double and some will limit the amount of coupons they will double. Some stores require shoppers to join their “member” program before using double coupons.
Giant Eagle has for years doubled printed manufacturer coupons valued up to $0.99. With only a fraction of manufacturer coupons qualifying for doubling, the majority of customers never realized savings through the program.
