Much of the Pittsburgh region will be under a heat advisory Thursday, according to the National Weather Service in Moon.
The heat index is expected to reach 103 degrees as the advisory will be in effect from noon to 8 p.m. Heat-related illness, such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke, could occur as a result of hot temperatures and high humidity.
The weather service advises staying cool and drinking plenty of fluids while taking extra precautions during work or time spent outside.
The advisory is in effect for Allegheny, Westmoreland and surrounding counties.
Strong thunderstorms with heavy winds and hail could be possible this afternoon and Friday, according to the weather service.

Heat-related illnesses can happen when a person’s body is unable to cool itself as normal during hot summer temperatures, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Symptoms of heat stroke are an extremely high body temperature, dizziness, a rapid pulse, no sweating and a throbbing headache. It can lead to death or permanent disability.
Hot temperatures can also cause heat exhaustion, cramps and a rash.
Those most vulnerable to high heat are older adults, infants and children, athletes and people who work outdoors.
Pets also can be susceptible to hot temperatures and humidity, according to The Humane Society of the United States. They should not be left alone in vehicles or exercise during times of high temperatures.
