History-buff dads can spend Father's Day exploring Washington County museums for free
Does your dad like whiskey?
If so, he can learn all about it — and the rebellion it engendered in Pennsylvania — for free on Father’s Day.
The Washington County Tourism Promotion Agency and Washington County Heritage Alliance announced Free Museum Day on Sunday.
From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., visitors can explore a prominent Underground Railroad site, an archaeological dig dating back 19,000 years, a glass collection spanning two centuries, and the elaborate 18th century home of one of the Whiskey Rebellion’s leaders, David Bradford.
The LeMoyne House, Bradford House Museum, Pennsylvania Trolley Museum, Meadowcroft Rockshelter & Historic Village, Duncan & Miller Glass Museum and the Whiskey Rebellion Education & Visitor Center will be open at no cost.
To help encourage visits to multiple venues, visitors can pick up a Free Museum Day Passport at all participating museums. Visitors will receive a stamp on their passport from each museum visited. Passports with three or more stamps can be entered into a raffle for a chance to win a $250 Tanger Outlets gift card.
“Free Museum Day provides an incentive for visitors to experience the rich history of Washington County on Father’s Day — a day for families,” said Jeff Kotula, president of the tourism agency. “We take great pride in these museums that beautifully showcase our region’s story as well as continue to position our county as a leader in tourism in the Greater Pittsburgh area.”
Tickets for Free Museum Day are required and can be reserved at WashCoFreeMuseumDay.com.
“These museums are gems in our community. We have found that many western Pennsylvania residents have not realized that these wonderful resources are available in their very own backyards,” state Clay Kilgore, executive director for the Washington County Historical Society.
