Kids home for Election Day? Here are some local activities
Tuesday is Election Day, and in addition to finding some time to cast their ballots, Western Pennsylvania families will also be looking to occupy the kids, as many schools also serve as polling places and are closed.
Here are some of the activities taking place across the region on Election Day.
Allegheny County
• The Carnegie Library in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood will host a day of activities from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., including a classic film screening, a visit with therapy pets and hands-on programs about democracy. The library is at 4400 Forbes Ave. Call 412-622-3114 for more.
• The Penn Hills Library will host a “KidzStix” free cardio drumming session at 1:30 p.m. The library is at 1037 Stotler Road. To register, or for more information, call 412-775-4700.
• The Brentwood Public Library will host a building hour at 3:30 p.m. for those in kindergarten through fifth grade.Children can use Legos, Magna tiles, Keva planks and more to create. Snacks are provided and registration is not required. The library is at 3501 Brownsville Road. Call 412-884-5694 for more information.
• The Monroeville Public Library will host the following programs: Story time at 10:30 a.m. (preschool through age 5); teen after-school program at 2:30 p.m.; teen and “tween” Dungeons & Dragons and tabletop role playing at 6 p.m. (ages 6-11). • The Friends of Scott Township Public Library will hold a bake/candy sale in the library’s lobby, 301 Lindsay Road. Baked goods and Sarris candy will be available starting at 10 a.m. The sale is cash only.
Westmoreland County
• The Adams Memorial Library in Latrobe will host its weekly Wee Read program, designed for children up to 2 1/2 years old and their caregivers. Sessions at 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. will combine songs, rhymes and socialization for a fun and engaging early literacy experience. The library is at 1112 Ligonier St. Register in advance by calling 724-537-4383.
• The Ligonier Valley Library will host family story time at 11 a.m., with an hour of reading and fun crafts for children. No registration required. The library is at 120 W. Main St. Call 724-238-6451 for more.
• An Election Day luncheon will be held 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at West Newton Church of God, 157 N. Second St. Menu: vegetable beef, broccoli cheese and stuffed pepper soups, chili; chicken salad sandwiches, ham barbecues, hot dogs, potato salad, macaroni salad, pie, cake and drinks. Dine in or takeout.
• Uncle Dave’s Art Studio in Lower Burrell will host “Art for Autism” events at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., a creative and inclusive class designed for those with developmental disabilities. Explore ceramic painting, painting on canvas, pottery and more. Activities are guided step by step. The studio is at 4135 Leechburg Road. Call 878-302-3095 for more information or to register.
