The skywalk at Kinzua Bridge State Park has reopened after high winds prompted an emergency inspection and a temporary closure, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

The McKean County structure was closed Wednesday and was inspected Thursday.

The skywalk stretches 225 feet above the valley floor at Kinzua Bridge State Park, about 145 miles north of Greensburg. It originally was built more than 100 years ago as a railroad bridge that crossed the valley, then the longest and tallest railroad structure in the world, according to DCNR. It was partially demolished in 2003 by a tornado, and twisted remnants of that destruction remain in the valley of the 339-acre park.

The viaduct was reinvented as a 600-foot pedestrian walkway in 2011.

The skywalk is inspected regularly, but additional checks are required in the event of severe weather, according to DCNR. Structural and rehabilitation work is planned for 2024.

Trails near the skywalk were closed during the inspection period, but other facilities remained open.
