Man fatally shot by police on Parkway North was suspect in shooting of teen in Butler
A man who died after being shot by police on the Parkway North Saturday night was a suspect in a shooting in Butler Friday, according to Butler police Chief Bob O’Neill.
In a statement released Monday, O’Neill identified the man as Devin Russell, 20, of Butler.
According to O’Neill’s statement, Russell was identified as a potential suspect in the shooting of a 17-year-old boy Friday night at Ridge Avenue and West New Castle Street in Butler.
The boy, who was found on Whitmire Avenue, had been shot in a shoulder. He was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital and then flown to UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh, where as of noon Monday he was in stable but serious condition, O’Neill said.
Police were continuing to investigate the shooting on Saturday.
“It has since been determined that Russell was involved in a police interaction on (Interstate) 279 in Allegheny County and Russell is deceased,” O’Neill’s statement said. “The Butler City Police were not involved in this incident and cannot comment on that specific incident.”
Russell was one of four people in an SUV that local police began pursuing in Penn Township, Butler County, just before 8 p.m. Saturday, according to state police.
The chase continued to I-279 in Ohio Township, where the SUV rolled off the highway near Camp Horne Road and Mt. Nebo Pointe.
After the crash, an officer from a local department shot Russell, who later died at a hospital. The three others in the SUV were hurt, and their conditions unknown.
The police department of the officer who shot Russell has not been named.
State police were investigating the shooting because it happened on an interstate.
