A Windber man was killed Friday afternoon in a Somerset County mining incident, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Joshua Mock, 34, was operating a piece of underground machinery when he suffered fatal injuries, police said. He was working in Acosta Deep Mine in Jenner Township. That mine is operated by Corsa Coal.

The mine opened in 2017 and employs about 100 people, according to Corsa Coal’s website.

There were four mining-related fatalities in Pennsylvania last year, two in 2023 and three in 2022, according to the Mine Safety and Health Administration. One of those deaths in 2022 happened in the Acosta Deep Mine.

State police said they are being joined in the investigation by the state Department of Environmental Protection and the U.S. Department of Labor and Mine Safety.
