Here are some of the latest news items from this morning, Wednesday, Jan. 3:

Mon Incline closed for repairs

Commuters who ride the Mon Incline will have to find alternate transportation for the time being. The funicular is closed for repairs until further notice, according to Pittsburgh Regional Transit.

Shuttle buses will take people from the upper station to the lower station during regular hours.

PRT shut down the incline at about 7 p.m. Tuesday after electrical malfunctions.

It is not clear how long the incline will remain closed.


Police say Christmas cookie distracted driver in Hempfield

A crash in Hempfield Township was apparently the result of a hungry driver, according to TribLive news partner WTAE.

Pennsylvania State Police said a driver told them she was “busy eating a Christmas cookie” before wrecking her vehicle on Dec. 15.

The crash happened at about 3:30 p.m. along Route 30 near North Greengate Road.

Police said the driver was headed westbound when her vehicle drifted off the road and hit a guide rail.

No injuries were reported, but police said the crash caused one of her tires to go flat.


Vehicle crashes into Butler building

A vehicle crashed into a restaurant early Tuesday in Butler’s commercial district, according to TribLive news partner WTAE.

Crews were called at about 10:30 a.m. to the Pack-N-Snack along the 300 block of East Jefferson Street.

No injuries were reported.

The wreck left a large hole in the building but owners posted to social media that the site will reopen Wednesday as scheduled.


Police say child hospitalized for drinking hand sanitizer in Fayette

Pennsylvania State Police are investigating after a child was taken to the hospital Saturday in Fayette City Borough after drinking hand sanitizer, according to TribLive news partner WTAE.

The incident happened at about 7:15 p.m. on Connellsville Road.

According to police, the girl’s father said the 8-year-old “drank an unknown amount of of hand sanitizer and had done so many times before.”

The child was taken to UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and is expected to be OK.
