Train strikes box truck in West Newton

Emergency crews responded Thursday morning a report of a train striking an unoccupied box truck in West Newton.

Responders were called shortly after 5 a.m. to the intersection of East Main Street and Water Street.

Emergency officials said the truck became wedged between the train tracks and a nearby building, which was damaged, and that they were working to help people stuck inside the building.

TribLive news partner WTAE said two people in the building were not injured.

The train did not derail, but railroad crossings throughout West Newton were closed.

State police investigate wrong-way driver on I-79

Pennsylvania State Police are seeking the identity of a motorist seen driving the wrong direction on Interstate 79 near the I-376 interchange on Tuesday in Robinson, police said.

Officials began receiving reports of a gray SUV traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-79 around 5:30 p.m.

In a social media post obtained by WTAE, a driver heading in the correct direction can be seen swerving and striking a median barrier in an effort to avoid the oncoming SUV.

The SUV driver has not been identified. Anyone with information is asked to call state police at 412-299-1607.
