Vehicle hits gas pumps on South Side, igniting fire

A Pittsburgh police officer was injured while investigating the scene of a fire Thursday evening at a South Side gas station, according to Pittsburgh Public Safety.

The officer was sent to the hospital for a hand injury.

Emergency services were dispatched at 11:20 p.m. to the Coen gas station at East 24th and East Carson streets for reports of a fire.

Crews at the scene reported the fire, which was quickly extinguished, had resulted from a vehicle striking one of the station’s pumps, public safety said.

Officers said the driver was still at the scene, but had left his vehicle. Police said he began fighting with them in the street when they attempted to question him.

Public safety said before hitting the gas pumps, the driver allegedly also struck an occupied vehicle in the alley behind the gas station. The driver of that vehicle was not hurt.

Police said they believe the male driver was heavily under the influence of drugs, alcohol or both. He was placed in custody and transported to the hospital for evaluation.

Police are continuing to investigate.

Missing Butler teen found safe, police say
