Snow was tapering off throughout the region Tuesday morning after rain turned into a mix of snow and icy glaze in some areas, leaving behind cold temperatures, according to National Weather Service meteorologists.
“There’s a frontal boundary moving through with some warmer air aloft, and a colder surface temperature,” NWS meteorologist Shannon Hefferan said Monday night. “As precipitation falls through there, it can create ice.”

Most areas now receiving light to moderate snow as the cold front continues to move away. Several school districts were operating on delays Tuesday, according to Tribune-Review news partner WPXI-TV.
Hefferan said colder air moving in overnight from the north, combined with the dropping road temperature, could create some slick areas. Heffran said temperatures went below freezing overnight, resulting in the potential for mixed precipitation.
