Nearly 50 dogs were removed from a house in Mercer County, about 60 miles north of Pittsburgh.
“It’s probably one of the hardest calls we’ve ever been on,” officials from the Humane Society of Mercer County said in a post on the organization’s Facebook page.
According to a report from Trib news partner WPXI, when humane officers got into the house Friday night, they had to wear hazmat suits because of the conditions inside. Of the 57 dogs that were found in the home, 10 were dead, WPXI reported.
Humane agents served a warrant at a home on Grange Road in Shenango Township around 4:30 p.m. on Friday., Youngstown television station WFMJ reported.
The homeowner wasn’t identified.
The dogs were being treated by a veterinarian Saturday morning and groomers were coming in to care for the dogs.
“We’ll get them spayed and neutered and vaccinated and then they will be available for adoption,” humane agent Courtney Ivan told WPXI.
