A suspect charged with shooting and killing a man and wounding another surrendered to New Castle police.

Anthony Thurman, 27, of New Castle was accompanied by his attorney when he turned himself into city police Wednesday.

He is in the Lawrence County Jail without bond, according to court records.

Police charged Thurman Friday with criminal homicide, attempted homicide and illegal possession of a firearm.

Officers responding to a report of shots fired on April 11 in the 500 block of East Winter Avenue learned that shortly after the calls to 911, two men were admitted to UPMC Jameson with gunshot wounds.

One of the victims, Michael Riser, 35, of Michigan died. The second man, whose name was not released, was treated for a gunshot wound to the upper leg.

Thurman faces a preliminary hearing April 24 before Judge Melissa A. Amodie.
