A Dunbar woman was killed and school van driver seriously injured Monday afternoon during a three-vehicle crash in Fayette County, according to state police.

Trooper Kalee A. Barnhart said Brenda Dewitt, 56, was traveling west on Furnace Hill Road in Dunbar around 3:30 p.m. when she tried to pass a vehicle in front of her. Dewitt slammed head-on into a Connellsville Area School District van traveling east. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The school van driver was identified as Richard Watson, 73, of Dunbar. Police said he had serious injuries and was taken to a hospital. Three students in his vehicle were taken to a hospital for evaluation.

A third vehicle collided with Dewitt’s vehicle, police said. That driver was not hurt.

Police said alcohol and speed are believed to be contributing factors in the crash.
