Pittsburgh region gets 1-2 inches snow overnight

Only very light snow is expected Thursday morning on top of what fell Wednesday night, National Weather Service meteorologist Jared Rackley said.

Between 1 and 2 inches fell around the Pittsburgh area between 6 p.m. Wednesday and midnight, Rackley said. The weather service measured 1.1 inches at its office in Moon.

While commuting this morning, be alert for winter road conditions.Please reduce speed, allow for proper braking distance, and drive with your headlights on. It is also necessary to remove all snow and ice from your vehicle. Drive safe and be careful.

Only another tenth- to two-tenths of an inch at the most is expected Thursday morning. State police advised drivers to be alert for winter road conditions, reduce speed and allow for proper stopping distance, and to drive with headlights on. Drivers should also remove all snow and ice from their vehicles.

More snow that had been forecast for Thursday night is now expected to stay south of the Pittsburgh area, Rackley said. There will be a chance for another tenth of an inch around sunrise Friday morning.

For the weekend, snow is expected to start again on Saturday, with about half an inch accumulating into early Sunday.

Rackley said temperatures will be pretty cold into next week, although the extreme cold that long-range forecasts had been projecting have not materialized for the region. The coldest low is expected Monday morning, where the forecast now shows 10 degrees, with single digits are possible, he said.

There will be a gradual warmup through next week, with temperatures getting into the mid-30s by mid-to-late next week.
