A female pedestrian was killed in a crash Monday evening on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Somerset County, state police said.
She was hit and killed by a vehicle just before the Somerset exit at 6 p.m., troopers said. That vehicle fled the scene eastbound.
State police did not identify the woman in a news release. They said she was between 30 to 40 years old.
She was in a vehicle that stopped on the left lane shoulder at mile marker 109.8, according to troopers. Police said she and her passenger crossed the highway to the Somerset deceleration ramp and then went across the traffic lanes again to return to their vehicle.
She was hit and killed by a vehicle traveling in the left lane, police said. She was pronounced dead at the scene by Coroner Wally Miller.
Police said there was no information about the vehicle that fled. Anyone with information is asked to call state police at 814-445-9606.
The incident closed the eastbound lanes of the Turnpike for several hours. All lanes reopened shortly before 11 p.m.
Traffic was detoured off the New Stanton exit and directed to get back on the highway at Breezewood. The eastbound Somerset on-ramp remained open.

A male pedestrian was killed on the Turnpike’s Northeast Extension in Lehigh County on Oct. 15, according to news reports. He was hit by multiple northbound vehicles between the Quakertown and Lehigh Valley interchanges while walking in traffic, state police said.
In April, a male pedestrian on the Turnpike in Beaver County was fatally struck by a westbound vehicle, according to news reports. The man was standing in the right lane.
