Dutch health technology company Philips said it will lay off another 6,000 workers globally.
The company, which has several locations Western Pennsylvania, said the move is an effort to restore profitability and improve product safety following a recall of respiratory devices, according to Reuters.
Half of the job cuts will be made this year, the company said on Monday, with the other half in 2025, Reuters reported.
The latest round of cuts brings the total amount of job reductions since October to about 10,000 — about 13% of Philips’ workforce.
In June 2021, the company launched a major recall of ventilators used to treat sleep apnea over concerns that the foam component meant to reduce noise could become toxic. The majority of affected devices were part of Philips’ first-generation DreamStation product family. An estimated 3 to 4 million devices were affected by the recall.
Philips locations in the region include Murrysville, Upper Burrell, Oakland and Shadyside. As of Tuesday, it was unclear whether regional offices would face layoffs.
