It was a year of starting again. Giving it another try.
The coronavirus continued to invade our homes and communities in 2021 but we learned how to rise above it. We got our children back in classrooms and engaged in after-school activities. Restaurants and theaters welcomed patrons in greater numbers. Businesses brought staff back into their offices when they could do it safely and got comfortable with remote work when it made more sense. Our sports teams agreed to safety protocols that allowed them to complete what now passes for normal seasons.
The data showed us that vaccines and masks could deflect covid-19 infections while we continued to work toward better long-term remedies.
Tribune-Review photojournalists were there. At celebrations and memorials. In the classrooms and on the field. They took risks to document others taking risks to strengthen their communities. The helpers, the heroes and the leaders. The struggling and the suffering. And the rest of us just learning to make our way in this new version of the world.
We took a look back at the moments that revealed the true character of the Pittsburgh region over the past year and we share with you this selection of images that moved us.
