The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank is warning people of potential scammers who have been posing as food bank representatives at several large events, including Rib Fest last weekend on the North Shore.

The food bank said Pittsburgh police are investigating potential fraud following several reports of people posing as food bank workers and soliciting donations at Rib Fest.

Charla Irwin-Buncher, the food bank’s chief development officer, said thousands of Pittsburghers rely on the food bank and other partners for food assistance. She said community support and donations are crucial to continuing food bank operations, so it’s important to root out scammers.

“We want to be sure every dollar donated is going to feed our neighbors, not being stolen by bad actors,” Irwin-Buncher said.

The food bank said it has heard reports of scammers at events near Acrisure Stadium, PNC Park and PPG Paints Arena, as well as in the Strip District and Downtown’s Cultural District.

Officials are asking people to report any suspicious fundraising activity to police and the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.

The food bank said it still seeks legitimate donations as the community is in a state of heightened need. Donations can be made at the food bank’s website or by calling 412-460-3663.
