With federal funding stalled by the government shutdown, Pennsylvania’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits are expected to run out this week, leaving many families uncertain about how they’ll put food on the table.
About 46,000 people in Westmoreland County and another 160,400 people in Allegheny County rely on SNAP, according to the state.
Here is a list of places across both counties that Pittsburghers can turn to for food.
East End Cooperative Ministry
The food pantry, located at 6140 Station St. in Pittsburgh is open Monday through Friday from 8:30-10:30 a.m. and then again from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
East End Cooperative also provides free community lunches Monday through Friday from noon-1 p.m., which are available for dine-in or take-out, according to their website.
St. Paul A.M.E. Church Food Pantry
Located at 1350 Locust St. in McKeesport, the St. Paul A.M.E Church Food Pantry is open to everyone and has no income requirements.
The pantry is open every second and fourth Saturday from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. and offers produce, dry goods and meats, according to their Facebook account.
Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank
The Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank offers two distribution options available to those seeking family-sized portion of grocery items.
The food bank holds both walk-in events where guests pick up their food on their feet indoors and drive-up events where volunteers pack your trunk while you remain in your car in a variety of locations including Carrick, North Side, Homewood, Allegheny Valley, Monroeville, Hill District, South Side and Wilkinsburg, according to their website.

Brashear Association Food Pantry
Located at 2005 Sarah St. in Pittsburgh, the Brashear Association Food Pantry is open to residents living zip codes: 15203, 15210, 15211 and 15227, their website said.
The Brashear CARES Food Pantry offers canned goods, shelf-stable items, dairy products, meats and fresh produce in addition to pet food and other basic hygiene items such as soap and toilet paper.
The pantry is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon - 4 p.m., according to the website.
Households must register prior to visiting the pantry.
Westmoreland Food Bank
The Westmoreland Food Bank ‘s Food Pantry Distribution Program provides families in need with a variety of fresh and nonperishable foods across Westmoreland County.
The program is available to those whose household incomes fall within the limits set on their website, and are offered on a long-term basis as well as a one-time emergency basis, according to their website.
Single income households must make under $28,953 annually. To check eligibility with additional people add $10,175 for each additional household member, as shown by the chart on their website.
Westmoreland Food Bank has pantries across the county, including Greensburg, Irwin, Jeanette and Latrobe.
Jewish Federation of Great Pittsburgh Squirrel Hill Food Pantry
The Squirrel Hill Food Pantry provides food for those in the 15217 zip code as well as provide kosher food to households in other areas.
The pantry is open on weekdays from 9 a.m.-12:15 p.m. as well as offers additional 1:30-2:45 p.m. hours on Tuesday and Thursday at 828 Hazelwood Ave. in Pittsburgh, according to their website.
The Millvale Free Fridge and Pantry
The Millvale Free Fridge is a community fridge which is located behind the Millvale Community Library at 213 Grant Ave.
The pantry is accessible 24 hours of the day and is stocked with fresh and frozen groceries from local food partners including 412 Food Rescue, the Gardens of Millvale, Sprezzatura, Lemon Tree Coffee and Abielle Voyante Tea Co., according to their website.
Community Forge Mobile Food Pantry
The pantry is open every Monday afternoon from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the Community Forge Playground, located at 1256 Franklin Ave. in Wilkinsburg.
From Monday to Thursday from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., walk-ins are available to those in need of food and baby products such as diapers and wipes, person hygiene items like tampons or reproductive health supplies and harm reduction items such as Narcan, according to their website.
The Speed Family Blessing Box Pantry Inc.
The Speed Family Blessing Box Pantry Inc. is located at 221 Ridge Ave in New Kensington.
The Speed Family Blessing Box & Pantry provides food, hygiene items and other necessities to over 500 people each month, according to their website.
The pantry has food distribution on the fourth Saturday of every month and prioritizes seniors, veterans and children. Their next distribution is on Nov. 29, according to their Facebook account.
Allegheny Valley Association of Churches Food Bank
The Food Bank is open for regular distribution every Wednesday from 1:30 p.m. - 5 p.m.
New participants can register on site of the food bank, located at 1913 Freeport Road in the Natrona Heights section of Harrison ever Wednesday between 3-5 p.m.
Allegheny Valley Association requires no income documentation required for registration beyond a form stating your income, according to their website.
