Point Park to help Ohio students hit by university program cuts
Students at public universities across Ohio are seeing their majors and programs disappear amid state-mandated restructuring and budget cuts.
In response, Point Park University in Pittsburgh is stepping in to help.
A new transfer scholarship, the Buckeye Fresh Start Scholarship, will support displaced Ohio students through additional funds and academic assistance, Point Park officials announced Tuesday.
Merit scholarships ranging from $16,000 to $22,000 per year are available, along with a $5,000 annual award for those transferring from Ohio public universities affected by the cuts.
“The widespread elimination and restructuring of programs at Ohio’s public universities has significantly increased stress and uncertainty for students,” said Marlin Collingwood, vice president of enrollment at Point Park, in the announcement. “The Buckeye Fresh Start Scholarship is our response to keep students’ dreams affordable and achievable.”
In addition, Point Park said it will expedite transfer credit evaluations, provide personalized transfer counselors and assign academic success coaches to ensure a “seamless transition” for students.
“Many of Point Park’s innovative academic programs in business, communications, the sciences and the arts are thriving, even as similar programs are being cut or de-emphasized in Ohio,” Collingwood said. “We’re committed to helping these students find a supportive academic home and graduate on schedule despite the abrupt challenges they’ve faced.”
Point Park said Ohio students affected can connect with the university’s admissions team for personalized guidance, and more information is available online.
