Police: 2 people killed after being hit by bus in Indiana County

Two people died Monday after being hit by a bus in Indiana, Pa.

Police responded around 2 p.m. to the intersection of Philadelphia and Seventh streets.

According to a police department release, an IndiGO bus collided with two pedestrians who were crossing the road.

The bus was traveling west on Philadelphia Street when it hit Ronald L. Mabon, 68, of South Mahoning, and Christina M. Perez, 39, of Ernest, while they were in a crosswalk, according to Indiana County Coroner Jerry Overman. Perez died at the scene and Mabon was pronounced dead at Indiana Regional Medical Center.

Their deaths were caused by blunt force injuries.

“The status of (the) traffic signal, pedestrian cross signal, direction of pedestrian travel, vehicle speed and movements, operator activity and environmental conditions are all part of our active investigation and that information will also become public record when it is available for release,” Police Chief Justin W. Schawl said in a letter to the community.

“As I said in March, our mission is to enhance the quality of life of everyone we serve — so one crash is too many and any loss of life is unacceptable to us.”

The department posted a report about the incident on its Facebook page.

TribLive news partners WTAE reached out to IndiGO for more information on Monday’s incident, who said they were unable to provide comment due to the ongoing investigation.

Police said this is the second vehicle versus pedestrian crash along the Philadelphia Street corridor resulting in death in the past seven months.

One person was killed and another injured after being hit by a delivery truck in mid-March. The woman who was injured in that incident died about two weeks later in a hospital. That crash is still under investigation.
