Police: Butler County man said he damaged football stadium lawn by doing 'donuts'

State police say a Butler County man admitted to causing more than $4,000 worth of damage to the Moniteau High School football stadium and other parts of the school grounds by driving around them in circles in an off-road utility vehicle over the summer.

Benjamin Sydney Abbott, 18, of West Sunbury, allegedly told troopers he also used the side-by-side to damage the high school principal’s lawn.

He faces charges of institutional vandalism, a misdemeanor, and criminal mischief and trespassing, both summary offenses.

State police said the incident happened shortly after 2 a.m. July 16.

According to troopers, Abbott rammed two fences at the stadium with the side-by-side to get onto the field. Once there, he performed multiple “donuts,” causing “significant damage” to the lawn.

Abbott then proceeded to perform multiple “donuts” throughout other areas of the school grounds before he went to the high school principal’s residence and also damaged that lawn, troopers said.

Damages to the school grounds exceeded $4,000, troopers said.

Abbott was charged via summons on Friday. He has no attorney listed in online court records.

A preliminary hearing is set for Nov. 19.
