State police reported they believe the father of a 4-month-old child unintentionally fired a shot in an Indiana County apartment, hitting his son.

According to police, the 21-year-old father fired a shot from a 9mm handgun while inside an apartment at 42 College Lodge Road in White Township, striking the child and resulting in significant injuries. When officers arrived on scene shortly before 6:20 p.m., they found the child had suffered a gunshot wound to his upper body.

Police said he is in stable condition.

“Troopers do not have any reason to believe that this was an intentional discharge of the firearm,” officials said, adding that the child, his mother and father were the only people in the apartment at the time of the incident.

The child’s parents immediately told a neighbor who called 911, according to police. The child’s parents took the boy to Indiana Regional Medical Center. He was then taken by ambulance to UPMC Children’s Hospital.

Once the investigation is complete, results will be provided to the Indiana County District Attorney’s Office for review.
