Local and federal police forces have opened investigations after the Hermitage office of U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly was vandalized overnight.

According to a statement from Kelly’s office, the damage was discovered Saturday. Expletives, disparaging accusations and derisive comments directed toward the Republican from Butler were scrawled across office windows in red paint.

Kelly has been a strong backer of President Donald Trump.

“Overnight, our new Hermitage District Office was vandalized. Local law enforcement, along with U.S. Capitol Police, are investigating the incident,” Kelly said in a statement. “Our staff members are safe and were not in the office at the time of the crime.

“Let’s be clear: Political violence and vandalism are never acceptable.”

Emails sent to the Hermitage police and U.S. Capitol Police were not answered Saturday .

Kelly represents the 16th District, which includes Butler, Crawford, Erie, Lawrence and Mercer counties and parts of Venango County. He was first elected to the House in 2010.
