MEADVILLE — The on-campus rape of an Allegheny College student inside her dormitory room by an armed man early Tuesday morning is under investigation by Meadville Police Department and Allegheny College.

The female student was attacked by an unknown man in her room in Ravine Hall, according to authorities. Ravine Hall is a 73-room co-ed dormitory on the east side of Allegheny’s campus.

According to a campus-wide email issued by Allegheny College at 4:37 a.m. Tuesday, the college’s Public Safety Department was alerted at 3:30 a.m. that a student was assaulted in a Ravine Hall residence hall room at about 1:30 a.m.

The college’s online crime log listed the incident as a rape Tuesday.

The man was described as approximately 20 years old with light brown skin, more than 5 feet, 7 inches tall, wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and red, white and blue hat, and carrying a handgun, the email said.

Both Meadville Police Department and Allegheny Public Safety were alerted and increased patrols in the area, the email said.

Chief Michael Tautin of Meadville Police Department confirmed the incident and the suspect’s description to the Tribune on Tuesday.

“It is being actively investigated,” Tautin said. He declined additional comment on the matter, citing the ongoing investigation.

Allegheny College, too, offered limited comment on the incident.

“Because this is an ongoing investigation, we are not able to comment further on the details,” Susan Salton, Allegheny’s vice president for college relations, said in an email to the Tribune. “College administrators have been working throughout the day to support the victim and to take additional steps to ensure the safety of our students and the campus community.”

Allegheny College lists Ravine Hall as housing for sophomores, juniors and seniors with single-gender by housing pods consisting of four double rooms and a shared bathroom; plus one gender-inclusive pod, according to the college’s website.

As part of its campus-wide email Tuesday, the college issued a number of personal safety reminders to students.
