Sheetz will launch a free meal program Thursday for children and families in need due to the covid-19 pandemic.

The “Kidz Meal Bagz” program will be available all day at nearly 300 stores across Pennsylvania, Maryland, Ohio, North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia, the Altoona-based convenience store chain announced Wednesday.

A list of participating locations is available online.

“The spread of covid-19 and subsequent school closures has left many children across the communities we serve without a reliable food source,” Travis Sheetz, president and chief operating officer of Sheetz, said in a statement. “It is our hope Sheetz’s Kidz Meal Bagz program will make a small difference and provide nourishment to those in need during these uncertain times.”

The meals will include a turkey sandwich, chips and a drink.

Families can ask employees at registers for meals. One bag will be offered per child; meals will be available daily while supplies last.

Sheetz said it will re-evaluate the program in two weeks to determine if it is still needed.
