Sheetz unleashes chainsaw on MTO sandwiches to customers' delight

At the Sheetz x Liquid Death Chainsaw-Sliced Sandwich Experience, people got to have their Made-to-Order sandwiches cut in half with a chainsaw after purchasing a Liquid Death.

Getting a Sheetz sandwich sliced in half by a real chainsaw was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for Sean Starr.

Starr, 36, of Bloomfield, drove to the Sheetz gas station in Seven Fields Friday to participate in the Sheetz x Liquid Death Chainsaw-Sliced Sandwich Experience, where people got to have their Made-to-Order sandwiches cut in half with a chainsaw after purchasing a Liquid Death drink.

When Starr arrived on site for the three-hour event, he was taken aback by the the large crowd.

Apparently, there’s a strong desire to have one’s sandwich sliced in half by a real chainsaw.

“I mean, what’s better than chainsaw-cut sandwiches? I can’t really think of anything,” he said.

Starr decided to purchase a Made-to-Order American chicken sandwich at Sheetz to be cut in half.

“I ordered a sandwich that I thought would get cut really well by a chainsaw,” he said, and he said it certainly met his expectations.

Once Starr received his sandwich order, the line to get to the chainsaw only took around 20 minutes.

“I honestly couldn’t believe it was happening,” he said. “I can’t imagine a better way to spend a Friday.”

A social affair

Influencer Jenna Ceriani, known as Chainsaw Jenna, was one of the people hacking through sandwiches Friday.

Ceriani, 24, is a native Pennsylvanian living outside of New Castle.

“This is like the best day at work — ever,” she told TribLive in front of Sheetz. “It’s been so much fun … I’m just blown away by the expressions on people’s faces when I go to grab the chainsaw … and there’s food splattering everywhere.”

Nick Ruffner, public affairs manager for Sheetz, said the company looks for fun events and collaborations to host to capitalize on its brand every summer, and Liquid Death has “really cool marketing,” citing its Truck Bed Sessionz in store parking lots around Pittsburgh last summer.

“What’s the most off-the-wall thing that we can think of that aligns with our brand identity?” he said. “We don’t take ourselves too seriously … we like to have fun, too … while also serving customers.”

Friday’s event was outdoors and featured music, as well as one free item of branded merchandise to take home for every participant, Ruffner said. People milled about 90 minutes before the official start time of 2 p.m.

Ruffner said people had to sign a waiver to participate.

Having Chainsaw Jenna be one of the chainsaw bearers allowed her to be “friendly” with attendees, he said, especially as a local.

“That aligns well with our employees and brand identity, too,” Ruffner said. “She’s having a lot of fun with the customers.”

Chainsaw Jenna was not only slicing typical sandwiches in half. Some breakfast sandwiches went under the blade as well.

“I don’t think there’s any limit on what she’ll chainsaw — probably a hot dog, too,” Ruffner said.

The sanitary limit for switching out chainsaws slicing food is three hours, which was the length of the event, according to Ruffner.

Two electric chainsaws were used during the event, with the blades made specifically for cutting food, he said. And a food-grade mineral oil was used as lubrication, he said.

“It’s really fast, it’s very clean,” Ruffner said. “Obviously, it’s food safe as well.”
