Motorists traveling through the region north of Pittsburgh Tuesday morning are likely to encounter scattered rain and snow showers that could intensify and limit visibility in some areas, according to the National Weather Service.

The rain showers are expected to change to snow at around daybreak and continue through much of the day, according to meteorologist Mike Kennedy.

The snow is the result of a cold front passing through the region.

Light accumulation is expected along and to the north of the Interstate 80 corridor and in the ridges, creating slick conditions along area roadways, the weather service reported.

More significant accumulation creating potential hazardous driving conditions along Route 80 are possible after sundown.

The high temperature Tuesday will be near 42 degrees with 6 to 14 mph winds from the northwest and gusts as high as 26 mph.

The rain and snow showers are expected to move out of the area on Wednesday and be replaced by dry, warmer temperatures for the remainder of the week.

The high temperature on Thursday and Friday is expected to be near 60 and climb through the weekend. Saturday and Sunday will be partly cloudy with highs in the low 60s.

The snow showers followed by a migration to more moderate weather come on the heels of windstorms that wreaked havoc in the region.

More than 13,000 customers of West Penn Power and Duquesne Light Co. lost power on Sunday when winds gusts of 50-t0-60 mph swept through the region, toppling trees and downing power lines.

Damage from the wind was widespread. There were no reports of injuries, but the weather service received reports of several buildings being damaged.
